Doodles — those charming, curly-coated crossbreeds like Cockapoos, Labradoodles, and Goldendoodles — have quickly become some of the most beloved family dogs around. With their intelligence, allergy-friendly coats, and affectionate personalities, it’s easy to see why people fall in love with them. But before you welcome a Doodle into your home, it’s important to understand what life as a Doodle parent really involves.

🐾 1. Understand the Doodle DNA

Doodles are typically a mix of a Poodle and another breed (like a Cocker Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, or Golden Retriever). That means they’re not just “designer dogs” — they bring a blend of both breeds’ personalities and needs.

  • Poodles are smart, energetic, and require mental stimulation.

  • The other breed may contribute calmness, loyalty, or a hunting instinct.

Your Doodle may inherit a unique mix of both — so be ready for surprises!

✂️ 2. Grooming Isn’t Optional

Many new Doodle owners are drawn to the breed’s “non-shedding” coats. While it’s true they shed less than traditional dogs, their curly or wavy coats require regular grooming:

  • Brushing: Weekly to avoid matting

  • Professional grooming: Every 6–8 weeks

  • Bathing: As needed (typically every 4–6 weeks)

Neglecting grooming can lead to painful mats and costly grooming bills, so be proactive.

🧠 3. Training Is a Must

Doodles are highly intelligent — which is a blessing and a challenge. Without structure, they can easily become bored or mischievous. Start with:

  • Basic obedience training

  • Crate training

  • Socialization with people, dogs, and different environments

Positive reinforcement methods work best — Doodles love to please!

🚶‍♀️ 4. Prepare for Daily Exercise

Even small Doodles like Cockapoos need daily exercise. This isn’t a lazy breed. A Doodle that doesn’t get enough activity can become destructive or anxious.

  • Walks: At least 30 minutes a day

  • Playtime: Fetch, puzzle toys, and training games help burn energy

  • Off-leash time (in secure areas) is a huge plus!

🧸 5. Your Doodle Will Want to Be With You — Always

Doodles thrive on human companionship. They’re loyal, affectionate, and often a bit clingy. Separation anxiety can be an issue if they’re left alone too often.

Be ready to:

  • Include your Doodle in family life

  • Consider pet-sitters or doggy daycare if you’re away frequently

  • Offer a crate or safe space for comfort when alone

🏡 6. Puppy-Proof Your Home

Just like toddlers, Doodles are curious and love to explore (and chew). Before bringing your pup home:

  • Secure cords, plants, and trash bins

  • Provide chew toys and interactive puzzles

  • Set boundaries early on (like no couch zones, if desired)

❤️ 7. Be Ready for a Deep Bond

Becoming a Doodle parent isn’t just about having a cute companion — it’s about welcoming a loyal, goofy, and intelligent friend who will be deeply bonded to you. They’ll make you laugh, challenge your patience, and fill your life with love.

Final Thought

Doodles are not low-maintenance dogs, but the effort you put in will be returned tenfold. With time, patience, and a little bit of dog hair on your clothes, you’ll find yourself wondering how you ever lived without your Doodle.
