What Is an F1 Mini Cockapoo?

An F1 Cockapoo is a first-generation cross between a purebred Cocker Spaniel and a purebred Poodle. In a Mini Cockapoo breeding program, the Poodle parent is usually a Miniature Poodle.

An F1 Cockapoo is:

An F1 puppy with a strong Poodle-type coat may shed very little. Another F1 puppy with a coat more like its Cocker Spaniel parent may shed more noticeably, particularly during seasonal coat changes.

F1 Cockapoos generally shed less than many purebred Cocker Spaniels, but their shedding level is usually less predictable than that of an F1b Cockapoo.

Do F1b Cockapoos Shed?

F1b Cockapoos are generally more likely to be low shedding because they have a greater percentage of Poodle ancestry. This makes an F1b Mini Cockapoo a popular choice for people who want less dog hair around their homes.

However, “low shedding” does not necessarily mean “no shedding.” Every dog loses some hair and skin cells, and coat characteristics can vary among individual puppies.

It is also important to understand that no Cockapoo can be guaranteed to be completely hypoallergenic. People with dog allergies can react to dander, saliva and other allergens—not only to loose hair. Anyone with significant allergies should spend time around Cockapoos before bringing a puppy home.

F1 vs F1b Mini Cockapoo Size

An F1b Cockapoo is not automatically smaller than an F1 Cockapoo. A puppy’s adult size can be influenced by:

* The weight and height of both parents

* The size of the Miniature Poodle used in the pairing

* The size of the Cocker Spaniel or Cockapoo parent

* The puppy’s individual genetics

* Nutrition, health and overall development

Breeders can provide an estimated adult size based on the parents and previous litters, but an exact mature weight cannot be guaranteed.

F1 vs F1b Cockapoo Grooming Needs

Both F1 and F1b Mini Cockapoos require regular grooming.

An F1 Cockapoo with a looser coat may be somewhat easier to brush, although feathering around the ears, legs and tail can still tangle. An F1b Cockapoo’s curlier coat may shed less, but loose hair can become trapped close to the skin and form mats.
